A tree’s roots are exposed after very sandy soil has eroded around it. I photographed this tree and its root system next to Aysgarth Falls in Wensleydale. It always amazes me how well trees cope when growing in these seemingly adverse conditions.

    1. Thank you, Sheila. It was amazing to walk around these spreading exposed roots. The soil was so sandy, it’s surprising that the trees are still able to get any nutrients.

  1. I have seen trees that seem to be growing from the rocks with exposed roots. This is the most magnificent system of exposed root I have ever seen.

    1. Thank you, Annie. I had never seen anything quite like this before, either. The roots were quite high and I remember having to lift my legs quite a bit to step over them. Trees growing this way seem so fragile but so resilient – like most things in Nature, I guess.
