Gilded Cage

A fruit of a Physalis plant sits in its skeletal gilded cage.

I found this interesting seed case at the back of a plant bed in the garden a few days ago whilst clearing away the Winter debris. There are so many plants packed into the bed that I hadn’t even noticed this plant growing in it – which is a surprise because the seed case is bright red before fading to a parchment colour.

Interestingly the plant is part of the nightshade family and I don’t think the fruit is edible.
