Hair!!

I went to the hairdresser today. It’s not something I enjoy and – in a way – I feel a sense of shame that I can’t confess to enjoying having something done to me which many women seem to enjoy and look forward to!

I put having my hair ‘done’ on a par with going to the dentist – except at the dentist one does not have to endure multiple mirror images of one’s teeth whilst having them attended to (or maybe that fetish hasn’t quite reached my dentist – yet).

I don’t know where my anxiety regarding hairdressers and hair salons began but it may be something to do with the fact that I don’t have the ‘right’ hair. When I look around at women in general, their hair seems to be generally well-behaved, fine, and really rather generally ‘amenable’ and ‘amiable’ and – further – being the ‘right’ type of hair with regard to hairdressers’ requirements.

My hair, on the other hand, is ‘difficult’: thick, wiry, course, dry …… one could go on – but, basically, it isn’t what’s appreciated, admired or – indeed – welcomed, at the hair salon. I’m usually greeted with an air of distaste and unacceptablility due to my hair doing what Nature intended rather than having been made to conform by way of straightening irons and ‘products’ and so on.

Today, when I answered my stylist’s probing question as to what it was I would “like today”, I answered: “layers”, to which the stern response was to question the very idea of ‘layers’ with my untamed, thick, wild – and very ‘un-stylised’ hair.

Fifty minutes later, however, I got ‘layers’. The sort of layers I wanted. My rebellious hair has been tamed for the time being – until it is washed and left to its own devices – once againย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Many thanks Lynn. I think thick hair really suits layers but in my experience hairdressers panic as they tend to think that layers will make my head look like a big fuzzy football if they introduce them. I’m not as intimidated as I used to be though ……. I think ……..

  1. I guess we all have “hair issues.” Mine is fine and straight and most of the time I feel is limp and lifeless… I can only dream of having thick wavy locks.. ha ha.. I do enjoy getting it “done” though, of course when it gets washed and I try my hand at whatever style it is supposed to have, it always returns to its usual flat look.. lol ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Thanks Sheila. Yes – I guess we all kind of wish we had the ideal hair that someone else has! My daughter has fine hair which adapts to any style but she would like – instead – to have thick hair like mine! I must admit that blowdrying is some kind of art that I simply cannot get to grips with (and I, shamefully, admitted such today!). If only I had talent with a big round hairbrush, my anxieties could be over …… ๐Ÿ˜€ (Yeah, right!).

        1. I inanely asked my stylist if she’d done her own (very neat) hair that morning (what did I expect? that she had all her colleagues around styling it for her before she left for work?? bleh) to which she predictably replied: “Yes”. She did try and explain how to dry my hair with said BIG brush but it was lost on me. I panicked for fear I would choose a small brush which would encourage curls rather than sleekness (gosh, it’s no surprise that life is stressful – hair aside). It conjures up memories from the late ’70s when I was asked by a friend (up to that point) to blow dry her naturally beautifully curly hair into something sleek and straight (she had broken her arm). Her instructions were to pull tight with the punishing brush whilst drying with the blower. True to form, I couldn’t be as brutal as required, resulting in my friend going out with some sort of hybrid curly-straight style. It could have made me famous but I was somehow destined for a life as an administrator instead ……..

  2. Ha, I wonder how many male followers are currently wishing they had your amount of hair. I think your hair looks ok in that picture, unless you’re saying that was taken from the front, then I think you need a bit more off the fringe ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. If the sort of layers you wanted don’t persist past your first shampoo, you could always fall back on a little help from Photoshop for new ones–at least with other self-portraits that you may come to post…

    1. I don’t think there will be too many self-portraits to be honest ๐Ÿ™‚ However I could perhaps frighten my customers at work with an idealised virtual version of myself a’la Max Headroom by the name of Ms Hairdo ………

  4. I am lucky in that I have found the best hairdresser I have ever had. Courtney is a sweet girl and her hair is similar to mine in terms of thickness and texture, so she knows how to cut it right. She is also a great conversationalist and we have great conversations about what is wrong with America and how backward it is compared to Europe.. I look forward to my appointments and the chance to talk to a kindred spirit.

  5. I’m with you – I don’t like going to the hairdresser, either! I got all my hair chopped off this year. I’ve never had it this short, but I like it. It’s low maintenance and I pulled it back every day in a pony tail anyway, so why bother with hair at all? Even with short hair, though, I put off getting it cut. The thing about long pony tail hair is I could get it cut once a year or so. Now it’s every other month. But, that’s the trade-off, I guess.

    1. I had my very long hair cut earlier this year too, Skipping Stones. I didn’t like it, however, and am in the process of growing it again but with the addition of layers to make it lighter and more manageable. Visiting the hairdresser a couple of times a year is more than enough for me!

  6. Oh, you’ve really opened a hornet’s nest here! Hair!! Grrr….. mine is of the fine, limp, variety. If I wear it short – very short – it always looks neat=boring, and requires frequent visit to salons of horrors….. So now I let it grow long, and even tho when outdoors it’s tied up, I do have other options if I’m in the right mood…. and best of all – no visits to salons of horror!!

    1. Salons of horrors is a good way of describing them! I don’t think it’s uncommon for women to feel intimidated or uncomfortable at salons as I know many who get their hair cut by friends or mobile stylists in their own homes.

  7. M, I like this post very much – its a very human and interesting blend of an image and words and I think it works very well. Well I haven’t got much hair – except on my face – so I can’t boast about these things – my (excellent) hairdresser just says “Short, Adrian?” every time I appear, and he’s never wrong!

And quite apart from all this much ado about hair, I like the picture – very unusual and very good. And I also think that if that’s your thatch, you’re not poorly off – many would envy that! Good stuff! And hair! A

    1. Thank you Adrian! It sounds as if you guys seem to have a better time with your hairdressers – interesting!

I had quite a giggle taking photos of my hair yesterday – a bit of a quirky idea!

  8. This is quite humorous Meanderer. My wife is in the same salon-boat so to speak. She has very fine hair and it won’t hold a style for more than a few minutes…so she had it cut short. I used to have a “mane” in my younger days but after hitting 35 it began to thin. Now I keep it short…no brush or comb needed. Fingers work perfectly.

    1. Ah – yes, David, I know what you mean about using the fingers to smooth the hair. I generally do the same as it stops it going too frizzy! It seems many of us have interesting hair tales to tell ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Many thanks Roberta. I am pleased with the way my stylist cut my hair. It looks very sleek and controlled at the moment but I am yet to wash and style it myself. That’s when my hair will regain control once more!

  9. Nice hair…at least it looks that way in the photo. I have thin, fine, long, dark brown, straight as a board hair. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the salon and I get layers to give the look of more volume. My best friend has thick, course, black hair with some natural waviness. She has to get hers thinned out at the salon. She wants my hair and I’d like to have more of her hair.
    The grass is always greener…

  10. I gave up on hairdressers years ago, I just hack away at it in the mirror with my hairdressing scissors. I’ve been doing it for so long now that I’m pretty well practiced and I’m usually happy with the result. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Clever you! I’ve been known to chop away at my hair with some not very good results. Perhaps you’d like to practice on some rather unwieldly, fuzzy, obstinate hair such as mine ……. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Love this post. I did a post awhile back about my communication issues with hairdressers. It seems no matter what I describe I want done with my hair it is always cut the same way by hairdressers no matter who cuts it. Love the color of your hair. My hair is a washed out mousy brown that has change more to gray over the past five years….
