We had our first deep frost of the season yesterday morning. Temperatures fell below freezing as the sky cleared. There was also a full moon which looked spectacular, glowing yellow behind the branches as I looked out of the window.
I had time to take a couple of photographs of leaves on my walk into work. This one – which was lying on the pavement (sidewalk) looked so pretty. I was in too much of a rush to get into work on time to take any more photographs, which was a pity as roof tops and paths, and trees and other plants looked so pretty with their glittering coating of sparkly ice.
It feels rather perverse to be so pleased to see icy weather but – as well as offering some interesting photo opportunities – there seems to be something in the British psyche which welcomes ‘proper’ cold weather in Winter; the sort of Winters we used to have before the mild grey ones took over.
I spoke to many people yesterday and most were happy to be greeted with the cold bright day. There were also many more people out walking locally, enjoying the bracing – but very bright – weather.
Very pretty! I do like ice crystals, there is always such an array of forms π
We, unfortunately didn’t see last night’s moon, which was supposed to be partially eclipsed.. too much cloud and mist swirling about.

Thank you Lu! Ice crystals are fascinating aren’t they? Don’t think we’ll be getting any more frost for a while; the sky has just darkened dramatically and we are in for lots of rain – and storms during the week. There was too much cloud down here too last night but I got a couple of interesting (and mysterious) shots of the moon the night before. Will post this week π

We rarely get this kind of frost here at the shore. I love the way the crystals show details and line the edges of the leaves. Nice.

Thank you Terry. The frost is very late this year. I wonder if we will get snow.

Thank you Sandy. It’s a little milder again today but the skies are very dark and we have rain. Storms are set for midweek. The weather is all over the place at the moment.

The ice crystals are pretty! If only they would stay that way then you could take the leaf home and display it as a holiday decoration.

Thank you Fergie. Yes – it would look very pretty wouldn’t it? I expect it looks pretty much worse for wear today.

Excellent ! Ice and frost can create such wonderful opportunities for creative expression, whether it is photography or what you say as to try to scrape the car windows, on the inside.

Thank you elmediat! Indeed: especially when one forgets that the windows need scraping when trying to get out in a hurry π

What a stunning picture, absolutely beautiful! We still haven’t had a proper frost or snow up here in Edinburgh (every other town around us has though!). I can’t wait for one of those frosty clear mornings.

Thanks very much Kieran! Gosh: I’m surprised you haven’t had any snow or frost up in Edinburgh yet. I guess Edinburgh gets a little protection from the elements arriving from the West – just as London does.

I think Kieran is still holding out for a good old dumping of snow – as per last year. It did snow on Saturday morning – and held out for almost a full day – but as Kieran said – we still haven’t had a “proper” snow π

Ah, I see. You have snow and then ‘proper’ snow! I love it. Even a few flakes of snow down here can cause problems π

A delightful shot and crisp capture in every sense of the word. It also makes me glad I live where I do. I don’t think I could hack a British winter these days.

Thank you Calvin. Ooh, it was cold that morning! It’s not easy but I do like the things associated with keeping warm: log fires; warm scarves and hats; blankets; hot toddies π

Beautiful image, I love the crispness π I hope that you’ll have a white Christmas, we will probably for the first time in years have a green Christmas ! Think I will have a talk with the winter God and see if he can blow some snow our way π

Thank you Carola. It looks as if snow is headed our way tonight and tomorrow as a result of strange things happening with the jetstream. The Christmas forecast looks mild and grey, but you never know! So it’s milder this year for you too? Interesting.

Another fine beauty. We have had an unusually warm season and it does feel odd, but at the same time it’s been so pleasant I can’t complain.

Thank you! I know what you mean: our Autumn and Winter has been incredibly mild overall and has felt quite strange but it’s been good not to have to use so much energy to heat the house.
